Palmistry (手相术) is the ancient art of studying the lines on the palm of the hand to describe a person’s character and foretell future events in his or her life.

A palm reader usually looks first at a person’s Life Line. This line begins under the index finger (食指) and goes down toward the wrist (手腕). This line describes the way a person lives his or her life. A person who has a deep Life Line is energetic. If a person’s Life Line is not deep, he or she is just thinking and talking about things without doing them.

The Heart Line runs across the hand, just below the fingers. This line describes one’s feelings. A person with a deep Heart Line is easy-going. If a person’s Heart Line is not deep, he or she is outgoing.

The Head Line is below the Heart Line and above the Life Line. It describes how a person thinks. A person with a long Head Line thinks about things carefully. If a person’s Head Line is short, he or she is confident and good at making decisions quickly. A person with a deep Head Line is clever and talkative. If a person’s Head Line is not deep, he or she is often untidy, but very creative.

The Story of Aries

In ancient Greece, there lived a king. He had a beautiful queen and two kids – one is a boy the other is a girl. But one day the queen died and not longer after her death, the king married a new queen. However, the new queen didn’t like the two children and tried many ways to get rid of them. One day, she thought out an idea. She said to the king, “Last night, I dreamt of Zeus ( 宙斯 ). He told me the country would be in a great danger. And the only way to save the country is to kill your two children. Thus, the country can be saved.” The king wanted to save his country, so he had to take the queen’s advice. Just on the way the two kids were about to die, a golden sheep suddenly appeared in the sky and took the two kids away. It was known later that the sheep was sent by Zeus to save the two innocent( 无罪的 ) children. Zeus thought the golden sheep had done a great job and made it one of the twelve star signs.

Thousands of years ago, the ancient people of Babylon and Egypt studied the stars in the sky and created the zodiac(黄道十二宫图). It was first used to tell time. Later, many people used the stars to describe a person’s character and to foretell (预言) what would happen in the future.

A person’s star sign is connected to his or her birth date. Some believe this sign can tell us about a person’s character. For example, some think that a person born under the sign of Aries (between 21st March and 20th April) is adventurous (爱冒险的). A person born under Cancer (between 22nd June and 23rd July) is kind and home-loving.

In many countries in Asia, people believe the Chinese horoscope describes character and can foretell future events. In the Chinese horoscope, there are twelve animals. A person’s animal sign is connected to his or her birth year. Each animal has a different type of character. People born in the Year of the Rat are friendly, but careful. Those born in the Year of the Monkey are smart and good at making money. The Sheep are shy and sensitive (敏感的).

In Asia, a person’s blood type is also used to describe character. People with the blood type A are calm and serious, but they may be selfish. Type Bs are independent but may be lazy. ABs are honest, and type Os are talkative.

Not everybody believes that animal sign or blood type can describe their character. But reading your horoscope can still be a lot of fun.

Character, courage and confidence are words you might use to describe your heroes. These words can describe you! Take action as follows and you’ll be a hero, too!

Part 1: Character

Character is something that makes you the person you are------like being honest, friendly, and helpful. See the chart(表格)below. On the left is our standard of good character. Write down your promise for each line on the right. Then, get a witness to sign it. Put it up where you’ll see it every day and do your best to keep it.

To build your character

Your promise

I will do my best to…

Be honest and fair

e.g. I’ll tell the truth when mom asks if I have finished my homework.

Be friendly and helpful

ⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹ

Be polite and kind

e.g. I’ll show good manners in class.

Be courageous and strong

ⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹⅹ

Part 2:

Of course it’s going to take a lot of courage to keep your promise. Courage is challenging yourself to do something even though you think it might be hard. For each promise, find out two or three ways to help you keep it. For example, if you think that Being Honest is the hardest promise for you to keep, one of the ways might be “Tell people about my promise so that I won’t break it”.

Part 3:

Confidence is believing that you have the skills to do something. Do you have a beautiful singing voice? Are you a good painter? These are all talents that can make you feel good, as well as the people around you. Once you’ve decided what your special skill is, think about how you can use your skill to make your corner of the world a better place. If you are good at art, try painting a picture on an old wall in your school (of course, make sure you’re allowed).

1.  According to the writer, what is needed to be a hero?

    A. Believe in yourself.                  B. Be full of courage.
